HFMWeek: Latam and Russian funds lead the way in 2016

Hedge funds in Latam and Russia are averaging double-digit returns this year, boosted by a number of macro factors, and are bouncing back from poor returns in recent years.

And while the Russian hedge fund index gained 5.5% last year, optimism was in short supply as a recession lingers on and international sanctions left potential investors cold. Teresa Barger, co-founder and CEO of Cartica, an emerging market activist hedge fund with over $2.4bn AuM, cites a number of reasons for the recovery.

“Emerging markets overshot on the downside last year, particularly on the currencies,” she says. “So we had some catch up this year in places such as Brazil, Russia, Turkey and South Africa.”
